Today (September 10th) is World Suicide Prevention Day. Suicide is never an easy topic to talk about but it’s important to address it, especially in such a tough year like 2020. There are countless people out there who feel like taking their own life is their only way to escape, but suicide is not a solution. Here is a small list of some resources available to you or someone you love who may feel the need to use them:

1) Crisis Services Canada : You can call 24/7 or Text between 4PM and Midnight (EST).

  • This national online service is described as, “…a national network of existing distress, crisis and suicide prevention line services. We are committed to supporting any person living in Canada who is affected by suicide, in the most caring and least intrusive manner possible”. At the bottom of their webpage there are provincial specific helplines as well as Canada Wide.

2) Mental Health Commission of Canada : Explore different ways to support mental health.

  • Your mental health is important. This is the MHCC’s goal: “People in Canada who live with a mental health problem or illness should be able to expect timely access to high-quality services — on par with those available for physical illness — no matter where or when they need them.” This is a great website to get a variety of information about mental health to share with others, or for yourself to get pointed in the right direction to resources that suit your specific needs.

3) Your Life Counts : A place where you can hear stories from people like you.

  • This is a safe space that want to help, “…people to say ‘no’ to suicide by steadying them emotionally, restoring hope and reconnecting them with their reasons to live.” They do this by having people share their own personal stories about their experiences surrounding suicide.

These are just some of the multitude of resources out there available to you, but you can always just reach out and talk to the people closest to you. Asking for help doesn’t mean you are weak, it just means you are human. We are always stronger together.
